Call for Papers

1. Conference Goals

In the construction of cultural soft power at the age of globalization, “national image” has become a focus of attention. The following areas of the thinking are pertinent: information capital (the end result produced by a range of information input and output between countries), psychological perception (cognitive and emotional interactions between in-groups and out-groups), national branding and international communication (mutual image construction in international media). These four areas define “national image” studies from a technical perspective, including commercial branding strategies, simple public-opinion management, and dominant image perception. Realistically, however, these “technical” studies are not dealing with the core issues in national image construction. In other words, while technicism pursues idealistic performances in nation branding, it ignores the pluralistic, open and interactive contexts of communication, misses the nuances in positive and negative image construction, and confuses deviation and misunderstanding, alienating both in-groups and out-groups to the concept of national image. From the perspective of intercultural communication, the definition of “national image” needs to break through simple technicism and turns to inter-subjectivity and inter-culturality, to create a national image full of vitality in multiple interactive environments. In the era of media convergence, cultural integration has become a development trend. Inter-subjectivity plays a groundbreaking role in the construction and dissemination process of nation branding. And communication between ethnic groups bypasses monolithic national image to inject diverse contents into the dialogue. In turn, these news perspectives are able to introspect the meanings and issues of ethnic group communication.

 

We are therefore eager to converse on “ethnic communication, national image and intercultural communication” in the era of globalization, rethinking cultural centrism, unilateralism, and cultural hegemony as cultural soft power, and looking for reciprocal, creative cultural forces to deliver us from the plight of soft power based on inter-cultural, inter-subjectivity and equal rights as the foundation of ethnic group communication and national image construction.

5. Deadline

Abstract: 500 words in Chinese or 150 - 250 words in English, please include titles, affiliations, email addresses, mailing addresses and a brief introduction of your paper. Please submit abstracts by June, 31, 2015 via email to: media.whu@gmail.com

Full paper: Authors of accepted abstracts will receive a formal invitation by the organizing committee before July, 10, 2015. Deadline to submit full paper is Oct. 10, 2015.

6. Conference languages
Bilingual: Chinese and English
Simultaneous interpretation will be provided.

7. Conference organizer will be responsible for accommodation arrangements.

    Participants are responsible for their own transportation.
