The present study examined that cultural affinity and communication competence of the host culture matters in cross cultural adaptation of academic sojourners. It was hypothesized here that international students from Southeast Asia are in a better adjustment and satisfaction level than South Asian students in Chinese universities due to cultural similarity and language skills. A sample (N=191) from the two regions, South Asia (N=l 19) and Southeast Asia (N=72), was tested through correlation and regression analysis. Two separate models were developed for socio-cultural and academic adaptation. The regression results showed that over expectation and handling of language problems outside campus were significant and negatively associated in South Asian case while it remained insignificant in Southeast Asian sample. Similarly, a regression analysis for academic adaptation also showed that problem in class lecture was also significant and negatively associated with South Asian case and remained insignificant for Southeast Asian model. The results of our study is also in the line of previous studies and affirmed that cultural proximity and language competency play crucial role in he process of cross cultural adaptation in new environment. Suggestions were directed in the light of empirical results.
