International Association of Intercultural Communication Studies (IAICS)

Conference Theme
In the delicate boundaries that exist where diverse cultures meet, representations of the self and the other are crucial. They determine not only subjective perceptions of existing relations between Equals and Differents, but they also influence the communication process. Discussing and clarifying the dimensions of these representations at different levels would allow us to make an overall assessment of Intercultural Communication. Therefore, the topics proposed will let us advance our understanding of these phenomena in today's intercultural relations context. Although we welcome all topics related to intercultural communication, you are invited to especially consider the following topics as a guide to our joint reflection.

Sub-Topics
1.    Historicizing Diversity.
2.    Language and Cultural Education.
3.    Dilemmas in the Construction of Public Space in Intercultural Contexts.
4.    Theoretical and Methodological Perspectives for a Horizontal Construction of Knowledge.
5.    Intercultural Educational Practices: Opening Paths for Dialogue.
6.    Territory, Development and Identity Processes: from Local to Global.
7.    Media in Intercultural Communication.

The languages for the conference are Spanish and English.

Goals
•     Provide a meeting place for scholars from various disciplines who wish to share their reflections and findings on the theoretical and methodological aspects of intercultural communication, and lay out a new cluster of problems for future research.
•     Promote exchanges between specialists from different parts of the world, on the converging issues of Intercultural Communication.
•     Disseminate by means of scientific publications, the current state of Intercultural Communication Studies.

Host City
San Cristobal de las Casas, in Chiapas State, is a colonial city in southeastern Mexico that represents in a wide scope the dilemmas of intercultural communication. Being one of the states with the largest indigenous population, it hosts the largest diversity of ethnic cultures and languages in the region (12 in all).  Furthermore, after the armed uprising by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in January 1994, San Cristobal has been the meeting place for activists, scholars, non-governmental organizations and researchers from all over the world. In a few years it has become, despite its size, a cosmopolitan city.  Thus the boundaries of diversity are shaped and smoothed in it, and the city is by itself an intercultural phenomenon. There is no better stage to discuss intercultural communication than this, where it is lived at all times. With hotels that range from two to five stars, tourist agencies that organize daily visits to major attractions, a cool weather and invigorating vegetation, San Cristobal offers a pleasant setting for this encounter. To reach the city, it is necessary to make flight connections from “Benito Juarez” international airport in Mexico City to “Ángel Albino Corzo” airport in Tuxtla Gutierrez city (Chiapas). Chiapas airport has direct taxi and bus transportation to San Cristobal city which is only 45 minutes from there.
